In this first activity, you will send an e-mail message to your "online
guide."
Note: If you are not completing this module for
the three-unit university credit option,
you will send this message to one of the designated KCUSD online guides.
Click on the "online guides" link above and note the address
of your online guide. If you have enrolled in the three
unit university credit option, your online guide will be bobjost@fresno.edu
Outlook
Express:
- Open
Outlook Express
- Click
on the New button in the upper left corner of the toolbar.
- Type
the address of your online guide
- Press
return (You will notice that the blinking insertion point moves
to the Subject: field.
- Type:
e-mail message #1
- Press
the tab key or click once in the message box to move the insertion
point to the body of the e-mail message.
- Type
your message. Briefly tell your online guide about your present teaching
assignment.
- Click
on the Send Now button in the toolbar. Note: Depending on how
you have configured Outlook Express, you may also need to click on
the Send and Receive button after the message screen disappears.
- Outlook
Express will sound a chime when the message has been sent.
- Your
first e-mail message is now on its way to the online guide. It will
be stored on the Internet Service Providers mail server until
your guide logs on and checks their mail. At that time, they will
be informed that they have some new mail waiting for them. If they
happen to be online at the time the mail is received, they will be
notified immediately. Your online guide will make every effort to
respond to your message within 48 hours.

- Click
on this link to open the Kings Canyon Unified School District homepage
in a new web browser window.

- Click
on the Web Mail link on the left side of the screen.
- Click
once in the box below Login Name and enter your assigned login
name
- Click
in the Password box (or press the tab key) and enter your assigned
password.
- Click
on the Enter button found to the right of the Password box.
- Click
on the Compose link.
- Notice
that your return address has already been entered in the From:
box.
- Click
inside the box to the right of To: and type the address of
your online guide.
- Click
inside the Subject: box (or press the tab key) and type: e-mail
message #1
- Click
inside the message box (or press tab) and type your message.
Briefly tell your online guide about your present teaching assignment.
- Click
any of the three Send buttons on the screen.
- Web
Mail will inform you that your message has been submitted and will
return you to the Web Mail home screen.
- Click
on Log Out and click the close box (upper left side
of the web browser window) to return to this screen.
- Your
first e-mail message is now on its way to the online guide. It will
be stored on the Internet Service Providers mail server until
your guide logs on and checks their mail. At that time, they will
be informed that they have some new mail waiting for them. If they
happen to be online at the time the mail is received, they will be
notified immediately. Your online guide will make every effort to
respond to your message within 48 hours.
Enter the
date you completed this assignment in your Logsheet.
Throughout
this module, you will be sending and receiving many e-mail messages.
This module was purposefully designed to include interactive exchanges
such as this with the firm belief that you can only truly master e-mail
if you use it on a regular basis.
So, what
else can you do with e-mail besides contacting your online guide? The
next activities are designed to introduce you to some other useful functions
of e-mail.
