| Subscribing to Other Educational Listserves (Optional) | ||
|
In this activity, you will subscribe to one or more of the educational listserves from the extensive list of educational listserves you explored in the last activity. As this procedure varies from one listserve to the next, follow the specific instructions found on the Listserve clearinghouse websites. Note: It will probably be wise to start with only one or two mailing lists until you see how active the groups are. Some mailing lists distribute dozens of e-mail messages every day, others are not nearly so active. Within a few minutes or a few days (depending on the speed with which the Listserve computer processes the request) you will receive a message asking for a reply to confirm the e-mail delivery path. In most cases, all you will need to do is select the REPLY function in your e-mail program and type OK in the TEXT field. Shortly thereafter, you should receive an e-mail message welcoming you to the listserve. You will want to print this message and keep it in a place where you can find it again. The message will give you important information on how to join in the on-going discussions. Also of great importance will be the instructions telling how to unsubscribe from the mailing list if you decide you no longer want to be part of it. Read this message carefully! More than one well-meaning person (your author included!) has inadvertently notified the whole mailing list of their intentions to leave the group rather than the listserve computer. Over the next several hours or days, you will begin receiving e-mail from the listserve you subscribed to. If the listserve is not very active, you can unsubscribe and select another. You may unsubscribe at any time after you are familiar with how the listserve functions.
