Without routine maintenance, your INBOX can quickly become cluttered with old messages. This activity will offer several suggestions to keep that from happening.

Outlook Express: Deleting Old Messages

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Select the message you wish to delete by clicking once on the message.
  3. Click on the Delete (trashcan) icon in the toolbar.
  4. If you wish to select multiple messages, hold the shift key while you click each message or click on Select All from the Edit menu.
  5. Click on the Delete (trashcan) icon in the toolbar.

Outlook Express: Saving Old Messages in a New Mailbox

Instead of deleting your old messages, you may want to move them to a separate mailbox. Here's how to set up a "Save" mailbox and move messages to that mailbox.

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. With the Inbox on the screen, click on the File menu.
  3. Move the cursor down to New and click on Folder in the pop-out menu.
  4. You will notice that a new folder appears in the Folder panel on the left side of the screen.
  5. Type Save to replace the default untitled folder.
  6. Click on an empty part of the screen to save the folder name.
  7. You can now move the old messages you wish to save to the Save folder by "dragging and dropping" the message title on the Save folder. (Click on the message title and hold the mouse button down while you drag it to the Save folder.)
  8. You can also select the message and from the Message menu, move the cursor down to Move To and select Save from the pop-out menu.
  9. You can easily retrieve or delete messages from the Save folder by clicking on the Save folder icon in the left panel.
  10. You can return to the Inbox folder by clicking on the Inbox folder in the left panel.
  11. Outlook Express offers many additional mail management features, details of which are found in the Outlook Express Help... under the Help menu.

Web Mail: Deleting Old Messages

  1. Open Web Mail
  2. Click on Mailboxes
  3. Click on INBOX.
  4. Notice that mail you have already read is indicated with the "open envelope" icon.
  5. If you wish to delete the messages you have read, simply click in the box to the left of the envelope icon. A check mark will appear.
  6. Clicking the Mark All button will select all the messages in your INBOX at one time.
  7. Clicking on the Set button next to Deleted on the lower left side of the screen will mark the selected messages for deletion.
  8. Clicking on the Purge Deleted button will remove the messages marked for deletion from the mail server.

Web Mail: Saving Old Messages in a New Mailbox

Instead of deleting your old messages, you may want to move them to a separate mailbox. Here's how to set up a "Save" mailbox and move messages to that mailbox.

  1. Open Web Mail
  2. Click on Mailboxes
  3. Type Save in the box to the right of the Create Mailbox button
  4. Click on the Create Mailbox button.
  5. You will notice that a new mailbox name Save is now visible below your INBOX.
  6. Click on the INBOX.
  7. Open a message.
  8. Click on the arrows to the right of Select Mailbox and select the new Save mailbox.
  9. Click on the Move to... button to move the message to the new mailbox.
