It is easy
to add additional webpages to your class website. This next exercise will
guide you through creating two more webpages and building links from your
default.html webpage to the new webpages.
The new
webpages will need to be saved to the same folder where you have saved
your default.html webpage. Follow these steps to create the two new
webpages.
- Open
Netscape Navigator and from the File menu, select New
and then Blank Page.
- Type
a few lines of text on the new webpage. You will be able to go back
later and finish these additional webpages... for now, we just want
to create the webpages and build the links from the default.html
webpage.
- Save
the first additional webpage as page1.html taking care to save
it in the same folder where the default.html webpage is saved.
Note: You can substitute another word in place of page1 (8 letters
or less with no spaces!) but must include the .html suffix
if the webserver is to recognize the webpage as a webpage. You will
also need to adjust the directions when building the links below.
- From
the File menu, select New and then Blank Page
again.
- Type
a few lines of text on this new webpage.
- Save
the second additional webpage as page2.html taking care to
save it in the same folder as the default.html and page1.html
webpages.
- Close
both the page1.html and page2.html webpages.
Building
Links to the two new webpages
- Open
the default.html webpage in Netscape Navigator.
- Select
Edit Page from the File menu to return to the edit mode.
- Position
the cursor on an empty line and type the text that you will use to
create the links to the two new pages. Something like link to page
1 and link to page 2 will do for now. Be sure to leave
some space between the text. Consider adding a vertical line |
(the shifted key right above the return key) or an asterisk *
to further separate the text.
- Now,
select the text that will serve as the link to page 1 by dragging
across the text while holding down the mouse button.
- Click
on the Insert Link toolbar icon (the little chain icon).
- Instead
of typing a web address, click on the Choose File button.
- If you
don't see the page1.html webpage in the dialog box that appears,
navigate to the folder where that webpage is saved.
- Click
once to select the page1.html webpage and then click on the
Open button.
- Click
on OK to create the link from the default.html webpage
to the page1.html webpage.
- Next,
select the text for the second link.
- Click
on the Insert Link icon.
- Click
on Choose File.
- Select
the page2.html webpage and click on Open.
- Click
on OK to create the link from the default.html webpage
to the page2.html webpage.
- Click
on the Save icon and then on the Preview icon to test
the links to your new webpages.
- Clicking
on the linked text should take you to the new webpages. Clicking the
web browser back button will return you to the default.html
webpage.
- If,
after you have finished adding text and graphics to the two new pages,
you want to build links back to the default.html and to other
webpages that you have added, you can do that using a modified version
of the steps above.
Your personal
space on the Kings Canyon Unified School District webserver will hold
dozens of teacher and classroom webpages. As long as all the webpages
and linked graphics are saved in the same folder during the creation
stage and the file naming protocols are followed,
the webpages should work when you upload them to the server. That process
will be the focus of the next activity.
