Sending E-Mail to Multiple Recipients

In this activity, you will send another e-mail message to me. You will also send a CC: (Carbon Copy) of the message to yourself. The term CC: dates way back in the dark ages when folks actually had to use carbon paper to create duplicate copies on their typewriters.

The CC: option makes it possible to send a single message to multiple recipients. It is possible to enter more than one address in the CC: box. Typically you just have to separate each address with a comma (no spaces!). Check your e-mail client's Help files for details.

Some e-mail clients also offer a BCC: option. The BCC: option allows you to send a Blind Carbon Copy. A blind carbon copy hides the list of other recipients that appears in the usual CC: e-mail headers and leads the recipient to believe that they were the only one receiving the message.

The BCC: option is also useful to send yourself a copy of important e-mail messages for your records. Your receipt of the message verifies that the message has been sent and timestamps the delivery date and time.

  1. Open your e-mail client.
  2. Select Compose Mail.
  3. In the TO: box, enter my e-mail address bjost@josts.net
  4. In the CC: box, enter your own e-mail address.
  5. If your e-mail software has a BCC: box, enter your e-mail address in that box as well.
  6. In the SUBJECT: or TITLE: section type e-mail B
  7. In the MESSAGE section, type a short message telling me how you have used e-mail prior to taking this course.
  8. SEND the message.
  9. Enter the date you completed this activity in your logbook.

The next time you check your e-mail you should find a CC: and/or a BCC: copy of the message you just sent.

Netiquette Issues

Consider using the BCC: option when you are sending a message to a large group of recipients. Not only does it make the message seem a bit more personal but it cuts down on the clutter in the message headers.
